Important changes to the Motor Insurance Database (MID) Legislation

With effect from 1 January 2008, the compliance requirements for the Motor Insurance Database (MID) will be changing. Insurers’ will be required to submit data to the MID within 7 days, a significant reduction from the current 14 day requirement.

So how will this change affect you?

For private motor policies holders, most insurers have already implemented systems that automatically lapse a policy if renewal instructions have not been received on or before the policy renewal date, even when a policy is issued via a us.

Commercial vehicle and fleet policyholders regardless of whether you are responsible for maintaining your own vehicle records on the Motor Insurance Database or we are, you will need to ensure that all vehicle additions and deletions are notified immediately.

There are no days of grace for motor insurance policies and the submission of your vehicles insurance details to The Motor Insurance Database is a legal requirement.

Increasingly the MID is being used by the Police to check if a vehicle is insured and if your vehicle does not appear on the database, it could result in your vehicle being impounded and a substantial fine.

If you have any questions regarding this change of legislation, please do not hesitate to contact your usual insurance advisor at this office.
