What does new for old mean?

The term used in household contents insurance to describe cover on a reinstatement basis. This cover means your policy will replace a lost or damaged item at today's purchase price.

However new for old may not apply to items such as household linen and clothing. Wordings vary from insurer to insurer and you should always check your policy wording.
